Genre: Contemporary/Humor
Release Date: February 2006 (an oldie but a goodie!)
About the Book: Ashley is just a normal girl who wants nothing more for high school to be over. She's ready to be out of her parents house and move in with her boyfriend. Ashley is definitely not the prom going type. But when a math teacher steals the prom money, Ashley finds herself on the prom committee and sucked in to helping her best friend make this the best prom ever.
GreenBeanTeenQueen Says: I'm trying to catch up on all my Laurie Halse Anderson books and so far this one tops my list! I loved Ashley and thought she was a great main character. There were so many great lines and I wish I could have quotes, but since I listened to this one on audio, it was hard to keep track.
The thing I loved most about this book was Ashley's family. I found her family to so refreshing. There's always YA books where the family is dysfunctional, the teens don't get along with the parents, or the parents aren't around, which can get a little tiring after awhile. It was great to read about a family that was fun and loving and really cared about each other. If I could, I would totally spend a day with Ashley and her family.
I did listen to this on Playaway (if you haven't checked out Playways, see if your library has them-they're awesome!) I really enjoyed this one on audio and thought the narrator was excellent. The voices for each character were distinct and matched their personality and captured the feel of the book.
Prom does have a little bit of a fairy tale feel to it, but I thinks its more of a realistic fairy tale. There's lots of humor and lots of heart, but without being sappy. Prom is definitely a re-read type of book!
It sounds really good. Great review!
