About the Book: Flory is a young night fairy who finds herself without wings when a bat snatches them off. Without her wings, Flory can't fly and has to find a way to fend for herself. Flory encounters a great cast of characters-some nice, some not and Flory finds herself on a grand adventure.
GreenBeanTeenQueen Says: I adored this little gem of a book! In just over 100 pages, Ms. Schiltz builds a beautiful magical story. Flory is not your typical fairy. Sure she's small, has wings, and lives in a small house. But Flory isn't a dainty fairy-this is a fairy story for reader's who want a fairy with spunk and attitude.
What I really liked was the growth of Flory throughout the story. Flory started out as a character I didn't really like-she was even somewhat mean. But as she grew and encountered new adventures, she became a character that I liked at the end. She grew up and learned lessons along the way that made her stronger. I loved that Ms. Schiltz could change my mind about Flory.
A lot happens in this short read. There were plenty of fun adventures and encounters with other animals that will keep readers engaged. The writing is beautiful and readers are swept up in the story. The illustrations are gorgeous and compliment the story perfectly. The Night Fairy would work well as a read aloud or if reader's found it on their own. Even though the target age is 8-12, I think reader's of all ages should pick it up and discover the treat that is The Night Fairy. This one is on my Newbery watch list-I would not be surprised to see this one somewhere on the Newbery list in January.
