About the Book: Soren is a young barn owl who has grown up hearing legends of knightly owls from Ga'Hoole. When Soren falls (or is he pushed?) from his nest and ends up being captured by a school for orphaned owls, St. Aggie's. But St. Aggie's isn't as good as it seems and Soren and his new friend Gylfie must discover a way to escape and find out if the legends of the guardians are true.

GreenBeanTeenQueen Says: I'm not a big fan of animal fantasy, but Guardians of Ga'Hoole is a series that I could really get into and enjoy. Kathryn Lasky's writing makes the owls so believable and Soren is a reluctant hero that you want to cheer for.

This is the first book in the series, so while it has a story on it's own, it's also setting up the rest of the series and Soren's journey. All the characters are well written and fun to read about and I really liked the owl mythology.

Sensitive readers should also be warned that this isn't a nice little story about animals-there are mean characters and some casualties. But the story is engaging and entertaining and fans of animal fantasy are sure to find a series to get hooked on.

  1. I love animal fantasy! And if you don't like it that much and enjoyed this, it must be awesome! Yay!

  2. My 11-year old daughter LOVES this series. She is a big fan, for sure. She cannot wait for the opening of the movie which I believe happens next week.

She is also a HUGE fan of the Cat Warrior series by Erin Hunter. LOVES THEM! I think she owns all the books in that series, even the guides.

I have not read either series because I am not a huge fan of animal fantasy stuff, but I did read The Sight by David Clement-Davies. That was a very good wolf fantasy read. It is one of my 15-year old's favorite books. She was 13 years old when she first read the book.

  3. You know, I've never been a big fan of animal fantasy either. I noticed they are making this into a movie (I think). I keep seeing previews for a new movie coming out with owls, and guardians. I can't remember if they named it after the book specifically...but it looks interesting. I love shape-shifter novels, and this isn't too far away from those, so I can see myself reading this.

13 District Mockingjay Tour: District 4

Hello and welcome to District Four. I'm sorry that Finnick isn't here to be your host. I know as a member of District Four I should be cheering for my own tribute, but after watching the last two Hunger Games play out I have fallen in love with Peeta Mellark! Why do I love Peeta? He's smart, he's funny, and he's charming. He stands up for what he believes, he's loyal and he's not afraid to do what's right. He's sensitive and caring but can also be strong and kick butt. He fights for Katniss and with Katniss. Peeta is a great diplomat and he knows how to bring people together. He can also be sneaky to get what he wants. Plus, did I mention he can bake? And he's hot!! But it's not just me! We have an underground club of sorts here in District Four-Seafaring Librarians for Peeta! Here's what some of our members had to say about their love for Peeta: - Team Peeta!! I love their relationship because they balance each other perfectly. Where
