Reading Slump

I hate reading slumps, but they hit even the best readers. You know the feeling-when you really want to read but you can't seem to find a book that feels right or "hits the spot." You can't seem to finish anything you start or find any book appealing. It's not that the books are bad-there are great ones in your pile. It's just reading isn't fun at the moment or it feels like a chore. As an avid reader, reading slumps are the worst! And the past few weeks I've felt like I've been in one.

I know at least for me, when I'm in a reading slump, I just want to find that perfect book that makes me not want to stop reading and I want to finish it in one sitting. And that's not always easy to do-especially since I have so much going on! I was feeling frustrated that I couldn't even manage to finish a book, so I ended up reading a bunch of short tween graphic novels and that made me feel better-I read five books in one afternoon-that's a great feeling!

In the past, the following books have helped my reading slumps:
Anna and the French Kiss by Stephanie Perkins (this is my current pull me out of a slump read!)
Really awesome romances seem to work best for me or reading an adult title after only reading YA for months.

So I decided to turn to you, dear readers, to discover your favorite reading slump reads! What do you do when you're in a reading slump? What books have helped pull you out? Do you take a break from reading for awhile? How do you beat your reading slump?

  1. I just got out of a reading slump. I'm not sure why they just like to creep up on me. I got out of this one by reading The Forest of Hands and Teeth and The Dead-Tossed Waves. I liked the second one better and it made me want to get into reading again! I usually like a good romance, mostly YA. That usually brings me back into reading. Hopefully you get out of your slump soon! :)

  2. I often turn to some of my favorite tried and true adult romance titles. Anything by Susan Elizabeth Phillips but especially Heaven, Texas, and Nobody's Baby But Mine. I also find Rachel Gibson to be enjoyable and humorous and I love See Jane Score. In more YA titles, Siobhan Vivian's new book has become a great book for me to get out of a reading slump. Not That Kind of Girl was so terrific I just love re-reading it.

  3. I have to say, I don't usually get reading slumps. The only thing that usually stops me from reading is school work, which will be over as of December. Recent books that got me really excited about reading and finishing them in one day were "The Maze Runner" by James Dashner and "Delirium" by Lauren Oliver.

  4. I'm in a bit of a reading slump as well, I actually just posted about it last night on the blog. :0

I'm attempting NaNoWriMo to get me out of this slump. Focusing on writing for a month should leave me dying to read a book. At least, I hope so.

One I would recommend for other slumpers though, would be The DUFF by Kody Keplinger. As well as Firelight by Sophie Jordan. Both were novels that I couldn't help but read in one sitting.

  5. Ha ha I was going to tell you to read Anna & The French Kiss, I got an ARC months ago and every person I have shared it with said the same thing, they could not put it down.
I HATE reading slumps! I was in a big funk when I got back from Europe last March.
When a slump happens I find myself going back and rereading some of my favorite cute romances.
    Austenland - Shannon Hale
A Company of Swans - Eva Ibbotson
    anything by Janette Rallison
Just Listen or The Truth About Forever - Sarah Dessen

  6. I always go back to a favorite book I haven't read in a while or spend hours in Barnes and Noble until something sounds just right. Good luck on your slump!!

  8. I get in a reading slump when I read books of the same genre/feel...a good hilarious rip-snorting YA book always does the trick, but is it me, or are they HARD TO FIND?!?

  9. I'm in a reading slump right now. I'm reading The Dark Divine and Love Sucks! but I can hardly get into them. I'm going to have to pick up one of the books you recommended. Thanks for the advice.

  10. I have taken breaks from reading when I'm in a reading slump. Other times I go back to my favorite few books that I have read over and over again. I also love reading Karen Kingsbury as well, I could pick up one of her books and be done in two days...you just can't beat that!

  11. I usually avoid reading slumps by saving a book that I really want to read for as long as I can stand not reading it.

I also have at least one book by Gena Showalter that I haven't read yet so I can always turn to that. :)

Reading slumps aren't fun but with some planning they can be avoided!

  12. I usually read something like J.D.Robb's murder mysteries or an adult romance whenever I hit a slump. Nice change of pace!

  13. I don't usually go in a slump, just frustrated that it's taking too long to read those longer books. There's so many I want to read. Often when I do slow down my reading it's because I'm not really enjoying the book I'm reading and forcing myself to read. I'm learning to say it's okay if I don't like something enough to finish it.

  14. I've been in a slump to the last few weeks. It's been too long since I read a book I couldn't put down and stayed up late to read.

  15. Sometimes a great book can pull me out of a reading slump (I indulge in a book that lots of my blogger friends are loving), but sometimes I'm afraid that my reading slump will cause me to dislike a great book because I'm reading it at the wrong time! More often, I'll reread something that I know I love - one of my childhood favorites or something like The Hunger Games. That usually does the trick!

  16. Gah! I'm in a reading slump right now. It mostly has to do with my new goal that I set for myself that I would finish every book I start, but this book I'm currently reading, I just have no motivation to finish. :(

Maybe my goal was unrealistic. Thanks for the book suggestions. Love some of those titles.

  17. Morganville Vampires Series! Rachel Caine is the best!

  18. Perfect timing for me too - I just posted about being in a slump. I haven't figured out what will pull me out, but I'm thinking it might be *gasp* taking a short break from reading. I don't know if I have the willpower for it, but we'll see. Good suggestions!

  19. Oh, I know what you mean. I've been in a reading slump since I finished Paranormalcy. But I feel like I have no time to read. I even have several books from you that I still need to read, I think ;p Pretty sure Across the Universer just might bring me out of that slump *hint hint* ;p

  20. It's funny, because I just reread Something Borrowed 2 weeks ago when I was in a reading slump! I definitely agree that feel-good romances seem to be the best thing in slumps.

  21. Great list! I enjoyed Something Borrowed but Something Blue is the one I turn to when in a slump. Glad to see Let It Snow on the list. I just got it from the library.

  22. arg I'm in a slump as well. Usually a romance with a guy in a kilt gets me back on track, but it didn't work this time. I think if I could manage to prune down that ARC stack that's waiting for me, it would be of great help. Ok, I'll try chocolate next.

  23. I don't have any particular titles that I go back to (I'm not much of a re-reader) when I'm kind of slowed down. I generally tend to go to a different genre or focus from the last book I read. Trying to jolt myself back into reading since I would presume the last book was what put me in a funk.

Bedtime Books for the Weary

Today I'm over at the ALSC Blog talking about some of my new favorite bedtime-themed books!

13 District Mockingjay Tour: District 4

Hello and welcome to District Four. I'm sorry that Finnick isn't here to be your host. I know as a member of District Four I should be cheering for my own tribute, but after watching the last two Hunger Games play out I have fallen in love with Peeta Mellark! Why do I love Peeta? He's smart, he's funny, and he's charming. He stands up for what he believes, he's loyal and he's not afraid to do what's right. He's sensitive and caring but can also be strong and kick butt. He fights for Katniss and with Katniss. Peeta is a great diplomat and he knows how to bring people together. He can also be sneaky to get what he wants. Plus, did I mention he can bake? And he's hot!! But it's not just me! We have an underground club of sorts here in District Four-Seafaring Librarians for Peeta! Here's what some of our members had to say about their love for Peeta: - Team Peeta!! I love their relationship because they balance each other perfectly. Where
